Kuehne+Nagel harnesses the power of the sun to lower CO2 emissions

As part of the goal to create more sustainable supply chain solutions, our partner Kuehne+Nagel, is reducing CO2 emissions in the Netherlands with photovoltaics installed on top of trucks.

The solar panels reduce fuel consumption by up to 1,200 litres per year, per vehicle. This reduces a truck’s overall fuel consumption by up to 6%, lowering CO2 emission per truck by 3.8 tonnes on an annual basis.

Traditionally, trucks consume a large amount of electricity which is generated by the alternator. The photovoltaics now supply the trucks with solar electricity. When driving, there is a decreased load on the engine which lowers fuel consumption.

An integrated solar management system also allows the charging of electric appliances such as phones and computers and to power the air-conditioning (AC) within the truck cabin and the tail lift, which is needed for loading and unloading.

Additionally, the driver can measure how much solar electricity has been delivered to the vehicle by the solar panels and how much per activity is consumed. During the summer months with more sun, the fuel consumption is even lower. Read more from our partner, K+N >

What affect will the strike at the UK’s biggest container port, Felixstowe, have on UK trade?

More than 1,900 shipyard workers begin an 8-day strike at Britain’s largest container port, Felixstowe. Leaving the reasons, politics and even ethics aside, how will this affect UK trade?

Sea Freight PortAccording to the ports website, Britain’s biggest and busiest container port, and one of Europe’s largest, Felixstowe, handles more than 4 million ‘Twenty-foot Equivalent Units’ (TEUs) of goods and has 2,000 ships arriving each year. Massive investment is ongoing, and its container handling capacity is forecast to double to 8 million containers in just 7 years.

The port can handle all types of cargo, including Ro-Ro and rail, but its main activity is deep sea vessels and containerisation. Felixstowe plays a very significant role in keeping UK’s trade moving and 48% of Britain’s container trade is through this port.

The main activity is for long distance shipments to and from Asia and, more or less, 17 different shipping companies operate between 700 overseas ports to and from Felixstowe. The strike will cause a damaging impact on both import and export supply chains, meaning that imported goods will not reach the shop shelves for consumers. Manufacturing companies will further feel the effects of an already damaged supply chain following the effect of the pandemic and Brexit. This means that the valuable raw materials that they require in order to manufacture their high quality, and sought after, ‘made in the UK’ goods will slow down and could possibly stop. And goods waiting to be shipped to UK PLC’s customers around the world will be held and subsequently delayed. Read more from Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Article >

Mobile Commerce: Generation Z now make up 32% of the global population

Mobile commerce is booming, which means right now your potential customers are browsing and discovering new brands via their smartphones.

Online sellers not investing in this channel risk missing out on a lot of sales… Fortunately, this dedicated guide produced by our partners, DHL, is packed full of mobile commerce insights and tips to help your business turn the scrollers into loyal, paying customers.

What is M-commerce?

M-commerce (or mobile-commerce) is the buying and selling of goods and services through wireless handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets. It’s a booming market: in 2021 alone, global mobile commerce revenue hit US$3.5 trillion.

Why is it so important for online businesses?

In 2021, 72.9% of global e-commerce sales came from mobile!

Customers of every demographic now use their smartphones to discover, research and buy products, which means online businesses like yours should be making m-commerce a central part of their sales strategy.

If your e-commerce website is not mobile friendly, then you can wave goodbye to a significant portion of sales. Consumers want the mobile shopping experience to be seamless, and to be able to complete their purchases – including payment – in a few taps. If they can’t, they’ll simply abandon their carts.
