UK’s first hydrogen refuelling service stations for HGV Fleets

Element 2, has announced its partnership with Exelby Services to develop hydrogen refuelling stations at its Coneygarth and Golden Fleece service station locations along the A1(M) and M6 motorways respectively, serving critical trunk roads in the North of England.

The Yorkshire and Cumbria sites will become the first public service stations in the UK to provide hydrogen refuelling services for hydrogen-powered Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).

Exelby and Element 2 are responding to demand from commercial customers seeking to rapidly transition to low-carbon, sustainable transport, with hydrogen forming a central pillar of their strategies.

Tim Harper, Chief Executive Officer, Element 2, commented:

This partnership is a pivotal moment in bringing hydrogen refuelling to the UK’s roads. Together with our forward-looking partner Exelby, we will provide a turnkey solution for refuelling hydrogen HGVs on key haulage routes in the North of England. We’re building the UK’s network of hydrogen refuelling stations in response to growing demand from fleet owners and operators as they accelerate the transition of their HGV fleets to zero emissions, which will be critical in helping the UK meet its zero carbon targets.

Rob Exelby, Managing Director, Exelby Services, commented:

Following the ever-increasing global focus on tackling climate change, now is the time to be proactive and embrace low and zero carbon alternatives to diesel drivetrains. We’re proud to be partnering with Element 2 who have shown a great understanding in how existing fuelling networks operate, and with their expertise we can implement hydrogen refuelling on our existing service areas to offer a one-stop-shop for all road users as we transition to net-zero.Read more from Multimodal >

Call for government to recognise maritime sector as best hope for levelling-up

Call for government to recognise maritime sector as best hope for levelling-up“The port sector has an essential role to play in growing economies.”
The new Chief Executive of one of the UK’s largest logistics firms has urged the government to embrace a partnership with port and maritime companies to help meet its objectives on levelling-up, net zero and economic growth.

Claudio Veritiero, who took over at Peel Ports Group in April, says that businesses in the sector are ideally placed to provide benefits and opportunities across these three national priorities, especially in the wake of Covid-19 and Brexit.

The comments are included in a 40-page report that Peel Ports has published on Monday 18th July in response to the government’s own whitepaper from earlier this year, in which the company says there is ‘enormous scope’ for synergy between what is required for levelling-up, achieving Net Zero ambitions and the work of the maritime logistics community.

Peel Ports goes on to set out practical ways in which businesses can be helped to maximise their impact, referencing the government’s own approach of six ‘capitals’: physical, financial, intangible, social, human and institutional. The report quotes research by Maritime UK showing that:

  • the port sector creates an extra £2.67 to the economy for every £1 it directly produces
  • this contributes to an estimated total of £29 billion to the UK economy
  • maritime workers earn 36% more than the national average.

Claudio Veritiero said:

“It has long been clear to those of us in the port sector that we have an essential role to play in growing economies and there’s never been a more pivotal time for us to assert our ambitions in helping everyone in the UK to thrive. Read more from Multimodal article >

The expansion project is designed to deliver the right infrastructure to facilitate growth as well as putting the business at the forefront of sustainable and digital logistics.

“The Covid pandemic has not only driven digitalization, but also significantly changed consumer behavior, rapidly accelerating the growth of e-commerce and shifting shopping habits. At Deutsche Post DHL Group, we believe this shift to online shopping will remain intact and, as e-commerce is one of the important pillars in our Group Strategy 2025, we’ll continue to invest in the sector. This investment in the UK is a key part of that, supporting the expansion and modernization of our European network. I’m really looking forward to supporting the business on its growth path in my new role as CEO DHL eCommerce Solutions starting August 1,” says Pablo Ciano, Executive Vice President Corporate Development at Deutsche Post DHL Group and designated CEO DHL eCommerce Solutions.

Nearly half of the investment will be in a brand new 25k m² hub in SEGRO Park Coventry Gateway, located south of Coventry Airport. The building has been designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ status to minimize its environmental impact through design features such as 7,000m2 of solar panels, LED lighting and landscaping to protect the natural biodiversity of the area. As well as incorporating EV charging points for cars, the site will also be equipped with LGV electric charging points throughout and sustainable fuel capabilities to pre-empt technology developments in larger vehicles over the coming years.
