Rail Forum launches ‘Made In Britain’ UK Rail Manufacturing Campaign

At IFS we strive to keep abreast of not just the international sector, but also our UK infrastructure, which after all plays a significant part of the Export / Import journey.

We also take responsibility for protecting the environment and therefore we have an interest in championing such initiatives as the Government’s ambitious target to grow rail freight by at least 75%.

Rail Forum were keen to launch a UK rail manufacturing campaign as part of their enhanced support stream for their manufacturing members. With a third of their membership involved in manufacturing, this rail focused Made in Britain social media initiative is a fantastic opportunity for their members to highlight their capability, capacity, and range of processes supporting rail manufacturing across both rolling stock and infrastructure.

Rail Forum’s manufacturing campaign will run from 17 July 2024 and they are delighted to have the support of ‘Made in Britain’ and incorporate their well-established and respected #MadeInBritain branding and hashtag.

John Pearce, CEO at Made in Britain said: “A strong rail sector, leading a bold, green UK infrastructure strategy must have British manufacturing excellence at its very core. The UK is proud to be home to many of the world’s leading makers operating in, and supplying vital components into, the entire eco-system of rail-related transport. The Made in Britain organisation is proud to be able to add our voice to Rail Forum’s campaigning (in 2024) to boost the awareness of everyone who relies on this remarkable network of innovators and enablers of the UK’s environmentally and social responsible rail transport and travel sectors.”

HGV expert responds to government changes in Driver CPC

You may well be aware that the government has announced upcoming changes to the Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training for HGV drivers.

The MD of the biggest HGV Training company in the UK, Driver Hire, has provided the following commentary about the news.

John Keelan Edwards, MD of Driver Hire Training, says:

“We are firm believers that Driver CPC is a good thing, for people in logistics and for the wider public. So the news that the Government is planning to maintain and enhance Driver CPC will be good for the industry, as the changes will make it a more flexible, accessible qualification. The changes will make it easier for former drivers to get back into driving professionally and easier for current drivers to renew training.”

“The updates will also make sure those considering a career in logistics know that there is a pathway for them, and there is ongoing investment in personal development.”

“The fact that it will now be possible to do modules non-consecutively makes Driver CPC more flexible for drivers, with 3.5 hours of learning a good way to keep people engaged with the training. Whilst no timescales have yet been announced, Driver Hire are ready for the new model, as we already have a set of 20+ 3.5hr modules covering a wide range of topics.”

General Average Cargo Insurance from International Freight Solutions

General Average is declared when a sacrifice is taken to save a vessel from total loss (e.g. when the captain makes a decision to lose some containers in order to save the vessel).

It is based on the idea that the sacrifice made for the common good should be shared proportionately among all parties involved, including shipowners, cargo owners, and insurers.

In the case of general average customers will have to share the financial burden of the loss even if their goods were not damaged and without cargo insurance they may be liable for a substantial out-of-pocket cash amount.

Recent Examples of General Average:

Maersk Honam (Fire). In March 2018, the vessel caught fire while sailing in the Arabian Sea carrying nearly 8,000 containers. The General Average declared for cargo owners with cargo aboard the Maersk Honam was 54% – meaning for every $100,000 of cargo on board, cargo owners would have to pay $54,000 to have their goods released.

Ever Given (Suez Canal). In March 2021, the large container vessel ran aground while transiting the Suez Canal. The Ever Given was stuck in the canal for six days, and the effort to get it moving again resulted in Egyptian authorities seeking compensation of close to $2 billion.Whilst General Average is still being finalised, cargo owners are expecting to face charges upwards of 20% of the cargo value they had aboard the vessel.

MS Dali (Baltimore Bridge). In March 2024, the 9,000 TEU capacity vessel struck the Baltimore Bridge, which subsequently collapsed on top of the bow of the vessel. Whilst the salvage operation is expected to last months, General Average was declared mid April meaning cargo owners face large costs to recover their cargo on board. Industry calls for ‘next generation’ infrastructure plan to decarbonise Britain’s truck fleet

pink van imageGovernment should reform its dated Plug-in Truck Grant – introduced eight years ago – to reflect the progress made by the sector in developing new zero emission truck technology and help cut CO2 by 18.8 million tonnes a year, says the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Following billions in investment from manufacturers, there are now 27 models of zero emission trucks available to UK operators with many more to come. While the Plug-in Truck Grant, introduced in 2016, seeks to help operators switch from conventionally fuelled heavy commercial vehicles to zero emission alternatives, models can only be eligible after undertaking an approval process that takes around two years. As a result, less than half (10) ZEV truck models on the market today are currently eligible for grants.

Given new truck purchases are critical long-term investments for hauliers operating with tight margins, transitioning to zero emission operations requires commercial benefit and operator confidence. Zero emission trucks are currently more expensive to manufacture so grants are essential if operators are to benefit from the many advantages, including potentially lower running costs, quieter operations and more positive public perception.

There are currently more pink vans on the UK roads than plug-in trucks

While 2024 saw a record number of new zero emission trucks registered, there are still just 327 vehicles in operation – meaning drivers are more likely to encounter a pink van (564 on the road) than a plug-in truck. These trucks already meet a wide range of business needs – with vehicles up to 44 tonnes and ranges of up to 311 miles – but fleets need a ‘next generation’ incentive scheme which makes it much easier for new zero emission trucks to qualify, plus a dedicated national infrastructure plan to power Britain’s road haulage fleet.

Hauliers who have already committed to fleet carbon reduction must then install depot charging or refuelling – a significant additional, but essential, cost – to ensure they can use their zero emission vehicles as easily and flexibly as their business requires. However, HGV operators do not have the same access to infrastructure installation support as other sectors, and even those who have the resources to invest in depot chargepoints face additional hurdles in terms of grid connectivity and local planning constraints. The challenge continues once out on the road as there is currently just one HGV-dedicated public charge location in the whole country, on the M61 Southbound at Rivington – preventing longer distance operators from going green.

Given truck decarbonisation is essential to the UK’s 2035 net zero targets and with the end of sale of new non-zero emission HGVs weighing less than 26 tonnes coming at the same time as the car and van sectors, urgent action is needed to create the right conditions to allow hauliers to plan their net zero investments.
