Experts say Shippers need to plan for New Greener Shipping Fees

Many of the world’s largest importers and exporters are insufficiently informed about the full implications of the forthcoming new emissions regulations and initiatives to decarbonise the global shipping industry – and the billions of dollars that will be added to freight costs in the future, according to shipping and supply chain consultants Drewry.

Green Logistics make happy customers and a happy planetUrging shippers to start planning for decarbonisation in shipping and warning of up to US$14 billion in annual extra associated costs, Drewry highlighted that the imperative to decarbonise the global shipping industry “is clear and present”, adding: “Pressure to decarbonise and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) is growing in all sectors. In shipping, the International Maritime Organisation’s target to reduce GHG emissions by 50% by 2050 (from a 2008 baseline) will be complemented by regional and national regulations.”

Besides regulatory changes resulting from decarbonisation policies, emissions limits and related taxes, It said there will be enormous technological change in the design of ships and their propulsion systems, with a transition to engines powered by low or zero carbon fuels.

Higher costs

“Overall, the transition towards low or even zero carbon shipping will result in higher costs and we believe that we have put together the first independent cost model to help shippers forecast and quantify additional medium-term direct costs, where they apply,” said Philip Damas, managing director of Drewry.

The European Union will be the first region to enforce ‘carbon taxes’ in shipping via its Emission Trading System, which will penalise users of high-carbon fuels such as conventional fossil fuels and apply not only to shipments within Europe, but also to all shipments to and from Europe, Drewry highlighted.

It said as shipowners look to comply with tighter environmental rules, several ’candidate’ green fuels are being considered, and they will have different implications and costs for shipping lines and for shippers. Read more from Forwardermagazine.com >

IFS ship Horse Racing Oxygen Chamber around the world

Just when you think you have seen it all, another unusual freight-forwarding request drops into your inbox. Yes, this makes quite a unique case study, which was very successful despite a change in destination mid shipping transit from China…

Case Study:
Hyperbaric & Cryotherapy Resources, Sheffield
Service provided by IFS:
Sea Freight – Multi-destinations
Original Destination: France
Final Destination: Dubai
Collection:
China
Consignment:
EQUINE MILD HYPERBARIC CHAMBER PACKED IN 2 CASES – total weight 6850kg, classed as ‘Out Of Gauge’ and shipped on a 20ft Flat Rack container.
Transit Time:
Shipped out of Qingdao, China, destined for Avilly – ST Leonard in France.
However, the Royal Endurance Team of Bahrain for whom the chamber was destined for, changed the plans midway through the sailing and wanted the goods re-directing to Dubai. So once the goods arrived in Le Havre, France, we had to re-arrange with French Customs for the container to be shipped out again on a different vessel to Dubai. All ended well with the chamber eventually being delivered as requested and on schedule.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves the use of a chamber in which a horse can breathe in 100% oxygen at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. This increased pressure allows more oxygen to be dissolved into the horse’s bloodstream, which can have a range of therapeutic benefits including; wound healing, infection control, reducing inflammation, improving brain function and enhancing athletic performance. HMRC’s deadline for exporters to move to the Customs Declaration Service has changed

At last, we can now confirm HMRC have extended the proposed deadline for UK exporters to be ready to use the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) from 31st March to 30th November, 2023.

HMRC says: “this is to ensure that businesses have enough time to prepare and allows them to ensure their export migration journey is smooth.”

HMR Customs platform known as the Customs Declaration System (CDS)HMRC plan to move all exports declarations from their CHIEF system to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) in 2023. The deadline extension is welcomed by many as the Customs Declaration Service has experienced some teething problems.

Unlike with CHIEF, exporters and importers are required to register for the CDS themselves.

Many clients will already be registered. For those of you who only export, and if you haven’t already, we recommend signing up for CDS as soon as possible.

What you need to do

  1. apply for an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number beginning with ‘GB’
  2. subscribe to the CDS so you will be able to submit export declarations from your software to the CDS
  3. read the latest CDS guidance – including the updated CDS toolkit and Key differences between CHIEF and the CDS guidance and the introductory UK exports guide to familiarise yourself with the CDS
  4. To receive updates and notifications about the CDS from HMRC, make sure they have your preferred email address.

Please don’t hesitate to contact IFS if you wish to discuss further.

IFS helps Sculptor Brendan Hesmondhalgh to ship his work around the globe

International Freight Solutions have shipped a number of Brendan’s Sculptures around the world and earlier in November, we were approached to arrange the shipping of some ‘Hare sculptures’ to various locations around the world including Brazil, China, South Korea and the US.

Brendan Hesmondhalgh – Hesmondhalgh Sculpture is a contemporary figurative sculptor, celebrated for his unique ceramic & bronze sculptures of animals, handmade from slabs of clay or sculptural wax.

Hesmondhalgh began working on monumental pieces after gaining a number of public art commissions. In some of these sculptures he experimented with animals on plinths and geometric bases which intensified the creature’s stature and allows for a greater contrast. The surface remains a focused element that he continues to develop. Adding colour, directional and textural marks.

Hesmondhalgh has established a distinctive style that is notably recognised and collected worldwide.

The recipients of the Hare Sculptures were all individual winners of the ‘Lush Prize’ – The Lush Prize offers a global prize fund to support initiatives to end or replace animal testing – 2022 Prize – Lush Prize
