Call for UK progress on decarbonisation from Logistics UK

Logistics UK has called for more progress from government on road transport decarbonisation in the wake of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s warning that there is a “rapidly closing window” to take action on global warming.

Michelle Gardner, deputy director of policy at Logistics UK, said: “The logistics industry is keen to play its part in ensuring it reaches net-zero targets, with decarbonisation a high priority for members across the sector. For many years the logistics industry has been working together to review possibilities for modal shift and to participate in trials, share new ideas and adopt greener technologies. However, further support is required from government, if industry is to meet these ambitious goals.

“Figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT) showed that as of October 2022, the total number of public electric vehicle chargepoints across the UK was 34,637. This falls woefully short of the 300,000 target the DfT has set for 2030, and it is vital that the pace of public charging installation increases to ensure targets are met in time for the phase-out dates of diesel and petrol vans and cars.

“It is also crucial that commercial vehicles – which typically require larger bays, longer reaching cables and a rapid-charging ability – are considered throughout installation to ensure that the logistics industry can continue to efficiently deliver to every sector of the UK economy.”

UK SMEs secure funding to transform future of freight

Winning projects will help to create greener ways of delivering freight across the UK.

Drones will be used to deliver packages on remote Scottish islands as part of 9 new innovative freight projects which have been awarded £1.2 million in government funding.

The first winners of the Freight Innovation Fund (FIF), backed by £7 million overall, have been announced today (11 April 2023) and could help create cleaner, more innovative ways of delivering freight around the country. This could lead to reduced emissions, increased numbers of high-skilled jobs and better delivery services in hard-to-reach parts of the UK.

The winners include Skyports Deliveries, which will use drones to improve island-to-island connectivity in the Orkney Islands, and Electric Assisted Vehicles, which is developing a 4-wheel, electrically assisted lightweight delivery vehicle to help reduce road emissions.

The fund is one part of the government’s Future of Freight plan launched last year, setting a strategy to work closely with industry to deliver a world-class freight system, which supports economic growth and builds on the measures already taken to tackle the global HGV driver shortage.

Roads Minister, Richard Holden said: “Whether it’s drones for deliveries on remote islands or zero emission buggies – we want to invest in future technology that could transform how we move goods around the country while reducing emissions and traffic and creating skilled jobs.

The Freight Innovation Fund gives innovators the opportunity to test their ideas and help our freight industry become greener and more efficient – unlocking better connectivity and boosting growth across the country.”

The winning projects are led by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have designed innovative technology and are partnered with existing industry companies to explore the viability of these solutions in real-world conditions. Read more from www.gov.uk >

Beacon, Stadler, and GB Railfreight place orders for 30 bi-mode locomotives for operation in the UK

Beacon announced the signing of a landmark contract with Stadler for the provision of 30 bi-mode locomotives for the UK to be operated by GB Railfreight.

Beacon Rail Leasing is a rolling stock leasing company headquartered in Luxembourg and focused on serving the European and UK markets. Stadler has extensive experience in the UK locomotive market. In recent years they have introduced with Beacon the Class 68 diesel-electric locomotive and the Class 88 bi-mode locomotive. And more recently taking a step further with the development of Class 99.

“Rail freight is already a more sustainable alternative to moving goods by road, but the Class 99 will increase our industry’s levels of sustainability and propel us further towards meeting the UK government’s task to decarbonize the rail industry by 2040 in support of the UK’s net zero ambitions,” says John Smith, CEO at GB Railfreight.

The 6-axle Class 99s can use existing 25kV overhead line where available combined with their high-power, efficient engine to complete the journey where electrification does not exist.

The introduction of these locomotives, with first in class environmental and performance benefits, underlines Beacon’s commitment to support rail freight in the UK, accelerating modal shift and builds on the strong environmental benefit of rail freight. After delivery of the Class 99’s Beacon will have over 500 locomotives in operation throughout Europe.

The Class 99 represents the next generation of locomotive and provides a solution for all freight flows throughout the UK. Read more from Multimodal article >

UK logistics industry welcomes proposed Northern Ireland agreement

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) and Logistics UK have both welcomed the deal reached between the UK government and the European Union last week on the Northern Ireland Protocol, as industry representatives and politicians alike get to grips with the detail of the agreement.

The so-called Windsor Framework that has been agreed by the UK and EU negotiation teams aims to resolve the current myriad problems for the logistics sector surrounding the transport of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, caused by the UK’s exit from the European Union.

The new agreement is said to reduce the proportion of EU rules applied in Northern Ireland to less than three per cent.

Under the agreement, goods from Great Britain destined for Northern Ireland will travel through a new ‘green lane’, while a separate ‘red lane’ will be for goods subsequently destined for the EU.

It is expected that there will be significant reductions in checks and paperwork for green lane traffic, though these would not be eliminated altogether, the RHA said, particularly where smuggling is suspected. Red lane goods travelling to the EU, including Ireland, would still be subject to the usual checks. Read more from Transportoperator.co.uk >
