At last, we can now confirm HMRC have extended the proposed deadline for UK exporters to be ready to use the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) from 31st March to 30th November, 2023.
HMRC says: “this is to ensure that businesses have enough time to prepare and allows them to ensure their export migration journey is smooth.”
HMRC plan to move all exports declarations from their CHIEF system to the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) in 2023. The deadline extension is welcomed by many as the Customs Declaration Service has experienced some teething problems.
Unlike with CHIEF, exporters and importers are required to register for the CDS themselves.
Many clients will already be registered. For those of you who only export, and if you haven’t already, we recommend signing up for CDS as soon as possible.
What you need to do
- apply for an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number beginning with ‘GB’
- subscribe to the CDS so you will be able to submit export declarations from your software to the CDS
- read the latest CDS guidance – including the updated CDS toolkit and Key differences between CHIEF and the CDS guidance and the introductory UK exports guide to familiarise yourself with the CDS
- To receive updates and notifications about the CDS from HMRC, make sure they have your preferred email address.
Please don’t hesitate to contact IFS if you wish to discuss further.
